Familiarization with the recommended literature, basic ability to take a medical history, knowledge of the principles and techniques of physical examination, knowledge and ability to interpret laboratory test results, knowledge of anatomy necessary to interpret neuroimaging tests, basic knowledge of groups of drugs used in psychiatry.

Method of conducting classes

 

  1. Classes are conducted in the form of seminars and practical exercises, in a stationary or remote form using e-learning methods, in accordance with the current class schedule. Remote classes can be conducted synchronously (online connection of the student with the teacher) and asynchronously. Asynchronous classes are placed on the Medical University of Silesia e-learning platform. The teacher has tools to assess whether the student has watched and listened to the entire seminar presented asynchronously. It is permissible to conduct a test during or at the end of the seminar to assess the assimilation of information provided during the classes.
  2. Depending on the epidemiological situation related to COVID-19, the form of classes may be changed, and classes may be held in a stationary, e-learning, or hybrid form, in accordance with the orders of the Rector of the Medical University of Silesia.
  3. The topics of seminars and practical exercises, information on the form in which classes are conducted, and the start and end times of classes are available on the Medical University of Silesia e-learning platform, in the unit's secretariat, and on the information board located in the Department/Clinic.

Rules for admitting students to individual classes

 

  1. The condition for admission to classes is punctual arrival, possession of a medical coat, stethoscope, and changeable shoes. To avoid crowding of a large number of students when entering the hospital, during the mandatory body temperature measurement, and when using the cloakroom, specific time frames will be assigned to individual student groups for these activities. In addition to the class start time, the student will also receive information on what time they should report to the hospital entrance. Students are required to comply with the hospital management's orders regarding epidemic safety measures, in particular, completing or providing an epidemiological interview. In the case of e-learning classes, it is recommended to log in punctually from your own account to the e-learning platform/appear on the list of meeting participants and actively participate throughout the entire meeting.
  2. During classes, basic ethical and moral principles, appropriate attitude towards the patient and the staff of the Department and Clinic must be observed.
  3. During practical exercises, the student is provided with personal protective equipment (masks, gloves, protective gowns, disinfectants), just like the employed medical staff.
  4. The student is required to have theoretical preparation according to the topics of practical exercises and seminars, in particular, completion of the required eLearning courses. Lack of preparation for classes may result in failure to pass the classes with the necessity to make them up or pass them at a time agreed upon with the teacher.
  5. The student is obliged to maintain medical confidentiality and protect personal data in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR.  
  6. The student is obliged to have a student ID card during classes and to show it at the request of persons conducting didactic classes.

Method and forms of making up for backlogs, including making up for classes due to absence

 

  1. All absences require making up.
  2. Absence from practical exercises should be made up by participation/oral or written credit after prior arrangement with the Head of practical exercises, with another practical exercise group. The student is obliged to make up for the practical exercises in the same form in which they missed the classes, i.e., if they missed online practical exercises, they make them up online; similarly, stationary practical exercises are made up in a stationary manner. With the consent of the Head of practical exercises, deviations from this rule are possible.
  3. Absence from a seminar conducted in a stationary form should be credited with the person conducting the given seminar.
  4. Seminar classes conducted using e-learning methods should be completed by the student before the practical exercises. A student who did not participate in seminar classes will not be admitted to practical exercises.
  5. Missing classes requires formal justification of the absence. The student should make up for the missed classes after the Head of practical exercises recognizes the justification as valid.
  6. Student absences resulting from: a) participation in meetings of the University's collective bodies, b) official representation of the University outside, c) activities for the University organized or co-organized by the Student Government, d) participation in a make-up exam are justified without the need to make them up, in accordance with §15 point 6 of the Study Regulations.
  7. In the case of quarantine imposition/obligation and due to other reasons preventing attendance of stationary classes in accordance with the schedule, a new date for making up the classes will be set.

Conditions and methods of conducting course credits

 

  1. The credit for classes is given by the academic teacher conducting the classes. The credit for the course takes the form of a multiple-choice test, in writing or orally. Failure to appear at the appointed time (without justification) is equivalent to a failing grade.
  2. The student is additionally assessed during practical exercises and seminars on the current topics of the classes.
  3. The scope of the required material for each day of practical exercises is announced in the class schedule of the given didactic unit.
  4. The make-up credit takes an oral or written form, depending on the arrangements of the didactic unit conducting the didactic classes, and takes place by the end of the examination session. A student who did not obtain a credit in the first term is entitled to two make-up credits.
  5. Failure to pass the credit in the second make-up term results in a failing grade and, consequently, not being admitted to the final exam.
  6. In special/random situations, with the consent of the Head of the unit conducting the classes, the student may take the credit at a later date - in accordance with the Study Regulations.

Practical exam

 

  1. The practical exam is an integral part of the course credit. Students who have made up for absences (§3) and obtained a credit for the course (§4) are admitted to the practical exam.
  2. Receiving a negative grade on the practical exam results in not being admitted to the test exam and a negative grade in the given term.
  3. During the exam, it is prohibited to possess/use electronic devices that allow communication with other people at a distance or to use materials and teaching aids not permitted by the examiners.
  4. In special/random situations, with the consent of the Head of the unit conducting the classes, the student may take the practical exam at a later date - in accordance with the Study Regulations.
  5. The practical exam consists of elements assessing the practical approach to the patient, examination technique, clinical reasoning, differential diagnosis, and treatment.
  6. The individual elements of the exam are a) collecting psychopathological symptoms from an interview with the patient, b) assessment in oral or written form of the ability to describe the patient's clinical condition, summarize the clinical condition, propose a diagnosis with differential diagnosis, and propose a treatment method c) assessment of knowledge regarding psychiatric symptomatology in oral or test form.
  7. The course of the exam and the change of form from a stationary exam to a remote exam in part or in whole may be modified depending on the current epidemiological situation related to COVID-19 and in accordance with the order of the Rector

Conditions for admitting a student to the exam in the so-called early term (term "0") and the rules for conducting it

 

  1. The condition for admitting a student to the early term/term "0" is obtaining a very good grade on the practical exam with the examiner's/Head of practical exercises/Head of the unit's annotation - "early term proposed".
  2. The decision to admit a student to the exam in term "0" is made by the Course Coordinator, taking into account, in particular, the student's progress so far.
  3. The exam in the early term/term "0" is oral and taken before a committee. The composition of the committee is determined by the Head of the Clinic or the Course Coordinator for courses conducted by more than one Department. The exam date is determined each time in consultation with the examiners.

Test exam

 

  1. The test exam consists of a maximum of 60 multiple-choice questions. To pass, it is necessary to obtain 70% correct answers. In special situations (including taking into account the degree of difficulty of the questions, the number of questioned questions), the Organizer of the test exam and the Dean may agree to lower the threshold to the values specified in the regulations for conducting test exams at the Medical University of Silesia.
  2. The condition for admission to the test exam is passing the practical exam. Lack of a positive grade on the practical exam results in not being admitted and a failing grade on the test exam. A student who received a failing grade has two make-up terms, in oral or test form.
  3. In special/random situations, with the consent of the Head of the unit conducting the classes, the student may take the exam at a later date - in accordance with the Study Regulations.
  4. The rules for conducting the committee exam are specified in the Study Regulations.
  5. The scope of the material for the exam is in accordance with the course syllabus. Due to the constant progress of knowledge, students are asked to check the current year of publication of books before the start of classes in a given academic year.
  6. To pass the course, it is required to obtain a positive grade on the practical exam and the test exam. In the final grade, the following proportions of the participation of individual partial grades in the final grade are adopted: 1/3 of the grade from the practical exam + 2/3 of the grade from the theoretical exam.

Disputes are resolved by the Head of Practical Exercises or the Head of the Unit.

  1. Students have the opportunity to use consultation hours after prior arrangement with the unit's secretariat.
  2. Complaints and comments regarding the course of practical exercises are accepted by the Head of Practical Exercises or the Head of the Unit.
  3. Student training in the field of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations takes place on the first day of classes of the practical exercise block.
  4. The teachers discuss the rules of these Regulations on the first day of classes. Students are obliged to familiarize themselves with these Regulations and sign that they have read them.

8. Course objectives

The aim of teaching is to master the basic knowledge of psychiatry and elements of psychology by students, in particular the pathogenesis of mental diseases, criteria for the diagnosis of mental diseases, biological and extra-biological methods of treatment, differential diagnosis and psychological knowledge concerning the diagnosis of personality disorders.

Conducts a medical interview with adult patient, carries out a medical interview with the child and his family, conducts a psychiatric examination, assesses and describes the patients somatic and mental state, recognizes the state of immediate threat to life, recognizes the state of consumption of alcohol and other psychoactive substances, plans diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive measures, recognizes the symptoms of drug dependence and proposes therapeutic treatment.
